MASLAN

Offering a lifeline to victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence

How does Maslan help the victims, families and witnesses of the October 7th massacre?

Maslan is the rape crisis centre nearest to Gaza and became the first responder to victims of October 7th. In the aftermath, Maslan received numerous appeals for assistance from survivors of rape, witnesses to the atrocities, and families affected by the violence.

Their cases include individuals who have endured unimaginable trauma, such as a young woman who witnessed her family’s murder, survived a sexual assault and now finds herself haunted and displaced. They are also assisting a young man traumatised by witnessing the rape of his fiancé, and a mother grappling with her own past assault while trying to support her daughter, who was at the Nova party.

Maslan has been providing therapists and other advanced crisis treatments to address the trauma particularly after its occurrence.

They have also noted that there is a concerning rise in domestic and sexual violence across various environments as a repercussion of the war. They have had to adapt their training and educational programmes and have retrained their volunteers with new tools and techniques in light of the circumstances.

“It’s special to know that once a week for a few hours I can come here and be myself – I can fall apart, cry, laugh, scream and shout. This group is life saving for me”.
