Kibbutz Alumim: Rehabilitation, Resilience, Renewal.

Kibbutz Alumim Fundraising Appeal

Rehabilitation, Resilience and Renewal — with your Help

Dear friends,

Kibbutz Alumim, a Gaza border community, was founded in 1966. During the past 57 years, our kibbutz has thrived — it has been a beautiful home for a flourishing, close-knit, multi-generational, collective, religious community that also produces top-quality agricultural produce.

That changed on the morning of Shabbat and Simchat Torah on 7th October, 2023.

Dozens of terrorists infiltrated the kibbutz. They attacked and brutally murdered foreign farm workers, they destroyed and burned our agricultural infrastructure and kibbutz buildings.

A ferocious battle ensued, led by the kibbutz security team. These 12 members of the kibbutz — our “security first responders” — held out for several hours before the IDF arrived and the terrorists were thwarted. Some of the team sustained serious wounds, but they fought off dozens of terrorists in eight separate attacks — and there is no doubt that they saved our lives.

At the time of writing, our future is uncertain — we face numerous unknowns, and we are experiencing immense upheaval and dislocation. All kibbutz members were evacuated on Sunday, 8th October — in the main to two hotels in Netanya. Although most of our houses remain intact, the ongoing war and the security situation in the northwestern Negev on the Gaza border, where the kibbutz is located, will determine when we will be able to return home. Currently, that could be in several months, or even longer.

Clearly, we will need to rehabilitate the kibbutz, and make absolutely sure that Alumim is a viable, attractive and inviting place for our kibbutz members and our families to return to. We want everyone to see their future back on Alumim.

For the sake of transparency, we should make it clear that Alumim will receive government compensation which will cover some of the repair, rebuilding and rehabilitation costs. However, the situation is extremely fluid — for now, the extent and amount of government compensation is unclear. One thing we can be sure of is that, inevitably, life on Alumim and the needs of our community are going to be significantly different to those of the past.

Since our future is so uncertain, it is hard for us to accurately map our long-term needs — our needs and priorities will likely change. However, we also know that since we are currently a ‘story’ in the news cycle and, with so many people eager to help us, it is essential that we have a fully operational fundraising campaign. That means that, despite this uncertainty, we have created a list of ambitious but tentative goals for our fundraising campaign. They comprise:

  • Equipment and an armoured vehicle for our kibbutz security team.
  • Children’s farm and petting zoo.
  • Playgrounds, and sports areas.
  • A purpose-built safe-room-standard youth club for our teenagers.
  • A safe-room-standard beit midrash (study hall/classroom) for the gap year students on the kibbutz’s Mechinat Yonatan pre-army program.

We stress that we must — and we will — wait until the picture is clearer. Only then will we be able to make responsible and carefully considered decisions about our needs. We want to reassure you that even if our fundraising goals change, every donation will go towards the kibbutz and its future. Your donations will go towards rebuilding our community and to reinforcing its resilience — your support means that we will be able to renew and reinvigorate the kibbutz.

The direct costs of processing your donation, transfer and currency fees will come out of the Gift Aid received, plus an additional amount to cover Myisrael's time spent on the administration of this fundraising page. This means that every penny of your donation will come directly to Alumim plus half of the corresponding Gift Aid.

Life on Alumim depends on our resilience. That translates into being able to live full, healthy, safe lives with the best security measures in place; with enriching shiurim and cultural programs; with excellent educational, therapeutic and leisure facilities for our children and youth — and with everything needed to ensure that Alumim is an attractive home to return to for us and for our future generations.

With heartfelt gratitude,

The members of Kibbutz Alumim
