How does the Lemonade Fund bring vital relief to women with cancer?
A cancer diagnosis can turn a family’s world upside down overnight. Alongside the physical and emotional toll, many women face overwhelming financial pressures from lost income, childcare, transport to treatments, hospital parking, wigs, prostheses and extra help at home. For single mothers and low-income families especially, these added costs can quickly become unmanageable at the very moment stability is needed most.
The Lemonade Fund was created to ease this burden and ensure women with cancer are not forced to face financial crisis alongside their illness. Founded by breast cancer survivor Shari Mendes after witnessing the struggles of other patients during her own treatment, the organisation provides immediate emergency grants to women in financial need. Working closely with social workers and hospital staff, the Lemonade Fund identifies vulnerable patients quickly so support can be given without delay. These grants provide vital breathing space, allowing women to focus on healing and caring for their families rather than worrying about how to make ends meet.

MEET SHELLEY
Shelley is 41, divorced, and has brought up her two sons alone for many years. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer, along with all the physical and emotional stresses, her financial position became untenable. She was unable to work during treatment and she was shocked to discover all the extra costs of her illness that were not covered elsewhere. They added an enormous amount of stress to an already traumatic situation…but a grant from the Lemonade Fund made a huge difference. It funded extra medical expenses and allowed her to have the shopping, cooking and cleaning help she needed when she was feeling very weak. Just knowing she had the support of the Lemonade Fund gave Shelley the confidence that she would get through this very difficult and exhausting time.
